How to Plan a Total Hip Replacement in Materialise OrthoView

Procedure selection:

1. Open the patient study and select Total Hip Replacement on the correct side.
2. Select Add Procedure.

Image scaling:

1. If a marker is present on the X-ray, OrthoView will automatically detect it and prompt you to indicate its size.
2. Enter or validate the size in the first field of the Scale Image dialog box.
3. Select OK.

SmartHip Wizard overview:

1. Locate the list of Wizards, or tools, on the left side of the window, which help you mark and measure key points on the patient's anatomy.

Using the Unilateral SmartHip Wizard:

1. Check the box next to SmartHip (Unilateral) Wizard in the left-hand panel to activate it for the full pelvis X-ray.
2. Use the control points to adjust the circle until its outline matches the outline of the patient's femoral head.
3. Place the transitional line so that the two central points are positioned at the base of the pelvis on the ischium, and the end points are positioned on the lesser trochanters.
4.  Once everything is properly positioned, click the Position Templates button to generate initial implant sizing and positioning.

Automatic templating and sizing:

1. See the template selection and sizing options on the left side of the window.
2. The dark blue-highlighted number is the suggested best-fit size based on the measurements taken by the Wizard.
3. The light blue-highlighted numbers are one size more and less than the suggested value.
4. To change the implant type, click on the banner under Generic Acetabular Cup/Generic Femoral Stem and select the correct implant from the list.
5. Change and set the implant values in the left-side panel to determine the correct sizing for your patient.
6. The template outline will become darker and bolder once you've selected all of the values.

Adjusting implant position:

1. To move a template, place the mouse anywhere inside the implant outline, then hold down the left mouse button and drag.
2. Hold the right mouse button and drag to rotate the template.
3. If a template, such as the femoral stem, has an axis line running through its center, when you left-click to move the template, it will only move along that fixed axis.
4. To move the template in any direction, locate the main control point at the center of the template. Place the cursor directly on this point, then click and hold the left mouse button to move the template freely.
5. See real-time feedback regarding measurements in leg length, offset, and cup inclination angles in the left panel under Measurements.

Reduce function:

1. Click the Reduce button in the top left of your screen to see a reduced view of your implant positioning.

Save, Commit, and Close functions:

1. Select Save in the top-right corner to store the plan and allow modifications later.
2. Select Commit to finalize the plan and upload it back to the PACS system.
3. Select Close to close the plan without saving any information.

Reporting:

1. When you select Commit, a separate report is generated. Click Report in the top-left region of the screen to view it.
2. Select the icon that looks like a paper report in the top toolbar to display report information on top of the X-ray view.

1. Click on the SmartHelp tab on the right side of the window for additional tips regarding any stage of the planning process.
