How to Segment the Heart with the CT Heart Tool

Learn how to automatically and semi-automatically segment the whole heart using the Materialise Mimics Core CT Heart tool.
Instructions
- Verify that your data has been properly imported into Materialise Mimics Core by checking for the image data under the Project management pane.
Semi-automatic segmentation:
- Navigate to the Advanced segment menu and select the CT Heart tool.
- Select Manual under Mode, and set the thresholds for the left and right heart with the slider tools.
- To begin placing your Seed Points, start with the Axial view. Scroll through the 2D images to view the structures more clearly.
- Select the structure from the list under Seed Points, and place your seed points, controlling the size and placements as needed.
- Repeat for the rest of the structures, scrolling through the 2D images of each structure to select the best view.
- Move to the Sagittal view and select the spine for the Other seed points.
- Click Apply.
- Click the green cube icon on the right side to view your seed points in 3D.
- Click OK, and review your structures in the Objects pane.
Automatic segmentation:
- Navigate to the Advanced segment menu and select the CT Heart tool.
- Select Automatic under Mode and Full Heart under Regions of Interest.
- Click Apply.
- Once the results are ready, click OK and review all your structures in the Objects list.
- Navigate to the Segment menu and select the Edit Masks tool.
- Use the Lasso tool to select part connections you don't want in your 3D model, then click OK.
- Select the Region Grow tool in the Segment menu, then click on your Target and press OK to remove all of the unwanted parts.
- Repeat steps 5 – 7 for other regions of interest. Note: you can also complete these steps in 2D for more precise outlines.
