Materialise Supports Hip Preservation Innovation Through Investment in Replasia
May 28, 2026
Led by our conviction that personalization plays a crucial role in improving clinical outcomes and that hip preservation is becoming an essential part of orthopaedic care, we've invested in Replasia — a Belgian medtech start-up developing personalized, 3D-printed solutions and anatomical analysis software for hip preservation.
Replasia's flagship solution, the 3D Shelf Implant, is a personalized, 3D-printed implant placed outside the joint capsule and designed to preserve future treatment options. Rather than replacing the joint, Replasia's technology offers a complementary alternative for selected patients with certain types of hip dysplasia, for whom traditional surgical options can be highly invasive and associated with lengthy rehabilitation.
In August 2025, Replasia initiated a first-in-human clinical investigation in the Netherlands — an important step in the clinical validation of its technology. This study evaluates the 3D Shelf Implant as a less invasive alternative to current standard surgical procedures for adult hip dysplasia and represents significant progress toward broader clinical adoption.
Hip preservation procedures require a deep understanding of patient-specific anatomy and biomechanics. Replasia's HipStudio is a commercially available, comprehensive service that provides surgeons with accurate measurements to support effective planning for hip preservation treatment. Their approach aligns closely with our mission to advance personalized patient care and make individualized solutions available to more patients.
Through this investment, we're supporting the continued clinical and technological development of hip-preserving solutions and reinforcing our commitment to innovation across the full spectrum of care, from preservation to replacement.
Replasia's portfolio complements our existing personalized orthopaedic solutions, including patient-specific acetabular implants designed to address complex revision challenges. We share the belief that improved biomechanical reconstruction and fixation are essential to long‑term outcomes.
As part of this collaboration, Replasia will draw from our extensive experience in personalized medical solutions, digital planning software, and established pathways to market. Together, we aim to advance more personalized, less invasive orthopaedic treatments that help patients maintain their natural anatomy and quality of life for as long as possible.
