Materials R&D Intern
Selective laser sintering (SLS) is an advanced powder-based additive manufacturing technology widely used to create biomedical polymeric parts. This internship focuses on improving the understanding and characterization of polymeric powders and the medical devices they produce.
Job description
The project involves two primary areas of focus. The first is the development of powder characterization methods. You will begin by reviewing and summarizing the state-of-the-art in polymer powder characterization techniques. The goal is to evaluate existing methodologies and develop in-house approaches or assess the feasibility of external techniques, such as DSC and particle size analysis. The final goal is to implement robust methodologies for accurate powder characterization and to compile a comprehensive library of polymeric powder properties for available powders. The second is part quality testing and measurement. You'll develop quantitative measurement methods for both non-destructive and destructive quality testing of flexible SLS-printed parts. The intern will explore and validate approaches to assess critical properties of the final parts, ensuring consistent and reliable performance.
What you will do
- Summarize the state-of-the-art in powder characterization techniques
- Explore and test internal and external methodologies for polymer powder characterization
- Develop a comprehensive properties library for polymeric powders
- Implement measurement methods for quality testing of flexible 3D-printed parts
Your profile
- Engineering or material science background with a strong interest in polymeric materials and additive manufacturing processes
- Must be able to provide a university internship contract (no internships after graduation)
- Student visa permitting internships in Belgium
What we offer
Location and type of contract
- Leuven, Belgium
- Internship via university
- Minimum of 6 weeks, summer or autumn of 2025
