Optimize Part Orientation with Magics

Description
Part orientation is crucial in additive manufacturing to ensure optimum print quality and material efficiency. By optimizing a part's orientation in Magics, you can significantly improve its stability and overall cost-effectiveness during printing.
Instructions
General tip:
- To determine the optimal orientation of a metal part, focus on the support surfaces and ensure the maximum cross-sectional area is reduced to a predefined value
Analyzing part data:
- Click on the Orientation Optimizer icon in the Home ribbon at the top of the screen and select the ANALYZE tab in the pop-up box to view current measurement data
- Click on the Analyze button to fill in the measurements displayed in the ORIENTATION CRITERIA text fields and review them
- You can visually inspect the maximum cross-sectional area by clicking the blue eye icon (next to the Max XY section field)
- Check the color-coded control element to see the specific area(s) on the part being analyzed
Optimizing orientation:
- Click on the Orientation Optimizer icon in the Home ribbon at the top of the screen and select the OPTIMIZE tab in the pop-up box
- Select the criteria most relevant to your specific part in the MINIMIZATION CRITERIA, such as balancing the support area against the maximum XY cross-section
- Click Optimize to automatically adjust the part’s orientation
- Fine-tune the results by using the sliders to adjust parameters in real time until the desired orientation is achieved
Using the Orientation Comparator tool:
- Click on the Orientation Comparator icon in the Home ribbon at the top of the screen and check the details in the Orientations List pop-up box
- Click Compare to add your current orientation against the preset options
- You can check and adjust your own orientation using the same criteria as in the optimizer by clicking the Add orientations button
- Review your orientation against the preset options by checking the color-coded highlights on each cell:
- Green indicates a better score for that specific criterion
- Red signifies a lower or worse score
