Art and technology are blended together seamlessly in Belgian theater auteur Stijn Devillé’s upcoming play, Gesprek met de Regen (or “Conversation with the Rain”). The play tells the story of a grieving couple trying to come to terms with the loss of their daughter, with the monsoon rains of Singapore as the backdrop. To bring this to life in the play, the theater company Het Nieuwstedelijk collaborated together with KU Leuven and Materialise to create a very special kind of rain machine – a complex bit of stage magic which involves 3D Printing, programming and lots of water.
It’s been hard to miss the excitement across the world about Marvel’s latest superhero movie, Black Panther. Head Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter’s luscious costume design has taken center stage. In order to bring her otherworldly blends between traditional African designs and the futuristic elements of the highly developed Wakanda civilisation to life, Carter approached Julia Koerner to collaborate on cutting-edge wearables for Queen Ramonda. Julia Koerner is an inter-disciplinary designer, experienced in architecture, industrial and fashion design, and specialized in 3D-printed wearables.
Every year, a Belgian designer is nominated as the Designer of the Year by the Biënnale Interieur, Knack Weekend and the Design Museum in Gent. This year’s winner was none other than Unfold, a design duo composed of Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen. We’ve had the privilege of collaborating together with Unfold on a number of their pieces, which are now on display at the Design Museum of Gent as part of a solo exhibition in honor of the Designer of the Year award. A parallel exhibition called “Hello Robot” is also being held at the same time and builds on the themes of design exploration at the intersection of man and machine.

What if you could create photographs which could also be enjoyed by people with a visual impairment? Brazilian photographer Gabriel Bonfim set out to create a series of photos in 3D which could be felt by visitors and “seen” in their mind’s eye. He calls it Tactography™ - and we helped bring the project to life with our Stereolithography printers.
Artist duo L+S were commissioned with creating a piece of art for Ullerntunet, a nursing home in Oslo, Norway. Their concept included installing a two-part sculpture in the grounds of the center, made up of a four-meter-high tree and its replica in bronze. Here is how the artists realized their vision based on a 3D scan of the original tree, as well as using 3D Printing and TetraShell investment casting to create the sculpture.
