Run for Benin is a yearly Materialise event to collect money for Benin, a country in West Africa. Why Benin? You can read the full story here, but what it comes down to is it for a summer school in Benin that Materialise hosts in collaboration with the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation.
Two Materialise employees volunteer for a month every year at this summer school where recent high school graduates work on projects to improve the local community. At the end of four weeks, three students are awarded scholarships to study engineering, economics or medicine at university. The run is hosted annually at Materialise HQ, but this year Materialise Malaysia also took part in hosting a run to help with the fundraising.
Runners collected sponsorship for their run before the event, by pitching the cause to potential sponsors - such as their family and friends, within Materialise and beyond - to run either 2km, 5km or 10km. The event was held on March 21st at a beautiful park, which is only a few minutes away from the Materialise Malaysia office in Damansara Perdana. It attracted almost 24 runners who ran next to a scenic lake overlooking the park area. The run started at 7:30am, and even attracted a few public spectators who regularly do their morning physical activities in the area.
Along the way, the runners were given drinks, snacks and bananas to refuel, and we had our OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) team on standby, just in case. The run concluded at 9:30am, when it was announced that the event has successfully collected almost RM 3351.45 (over 900USD) in donation money!
The activity reinforce our mission to create a better and healthier world, by encouraging healthy activity such as the Run4Benin while projecting the good cause to the public and contributing to the community from the act of donation. Overall everyone had a great time, and even had enough energy for a fun picture at the end!
