The world’s largest online bike store, Chain Reaction Cycles, designed and 3D printed the Points Jersey trophy for this year’s Tour of Britain road cycling event. Chain Reaction Cycles were a title sponsor of this year’s Tour of Britain cycling event. British cycling’s premier road cycling event took place from the 4th – 11th September, consisting of 8 stages across the length and breadth of the UK, covering over 1000 miles. With 21 teams and 126 riders the Tour started in Glasgow on St George’s square, with the finale in the centre of London that completed on Regent Street St James.

As a title sponsor Chain Reaction Cycles presented the Chain Reaction Cycles Points Jersey, awarded to the most consistent finisher who had accumulated the most points at the end of each stage. The winner received the blue and white jersey, along with the 3D-Printed Chain Reaction Cycles trophy.

Designed by Alan Boyd, Design Engineer for Vitus Bikes at Chain Reaction Cycles, the unique trophy took its inspiration from the company’s flagship model, the Vitus Vitesse Evo, a full carbon, UCI accredited bike. The Vitus Vitesse Evo is also the bike that the An Post Chain Reaction Sean Kelly team were riding during the Tour of Britain.

Talking to us about his design and selection of 3D Printing, “I wanted to design something that was unique, that hadn’t been done before. I’ve had experience of 3D printing for other projects and given the nature of the design this was the only way to produce the trophy - it’s detailed and intricate and you couldn’t cast it unless it was done in two pieces. It needed to go straight to additive manufacturing because of the benefits of the technology.”

Chain Reaction Cycles came to Materialise OnSite, our online ordering platform, to produce the eight trophies, printed with Laser Sintering and finished in-house by Chain Reaction Cycles. Alan selected Materialise OnSite as he was up against tight timescales and needed a provider that could deliver the trophies in just over a week. “Having used Materialise OnSite before for prototyping projects I knew I could rely on Materialise. I’ve always found them to be exceptionally reliable, well-priced and offering a quick turnaround.”
