And they’re not afraid to innovate. Aoyama’s We DDD collection, created in 2015 together with Materialise, was the first 3D-printed eyewear collection in France. In total, the company exports 18% of its 5.5 million euro turnover – and the We DDD collection contributes strongly to that. It’s a co-creation with a clear agenda: by 3D printing the We DDD collection, Aoyama is able to keep production localized and eliminate stock, as well as offering their customers a completely customizable range of eyewear. We offer our in-depth expertise on 3D printing technology, and Aoyama brings their knowledge of eyewear to the table; together we were able to create an end product that combines the best of both industries. It is this long-term co-creation between Aoyama and Materialise that enables Aoyama to benefit from Additive Manufacturing and express their experimental aesthetic to the maximum, taking advantage of the limitless design freedom to create cool features like flexible temple arms and a choice of textures. The ultimate goal for We DDD is mass customization: the possibility of offering customers endless variations of eyewear, which is perfectly suited to individual needs. As the Entreprise à l’Export prize shows, Aoyama is doing an exceptional job of taking homegrown innovation into globally oriented business.
“The We DDD collection is designed for the tech-savvy, fashion-oriented consumer of today: aware of what they want and the high quality they deserve. Standardized production and a one-size-fits-all approach are no longer enough. Aoyama’s goal with this collection was to bring true mass customization to a luxury consumer-grade product.”
Philippe Beuscart, Aoyama CEO
