How to Get Started with Materialise Mimics Core

Instructions

Importing DICOM images:

  1. Click the New Project icon, represented by a blank sheet of paper, in the top left of your window to launch the Import Wizard.
  2. Select the parent DICOM folder that contains your images, then click Next.
  3. Review the preview and DICOM tags, then click Open to load the images into a Mimics project.


Software interface overview:

  1. Identify the three planar views: Coronal (top left), Axial (top right), and Sagittal (bottom left). The empty space in the bottom right is where any 3D models will appear.
  2. Use the Project Manager panel on the right side as a hub to manage image data, objects, and properties of those objects.


Understanding the bottom panel:

  1. Use the Logger tab to track your actions.
  2. Adjust Volume Rendering parameters in the second tab.
  3. Navigate to the Contrast tab to adjust image windowing. Shortcut: hold right-click and drag left-to-right for brightness or up-and-down for contrast.
  4. Select predefined sets for CT scans to automatically adapt the scale for specific anatomy.


Exploring the top menu:

  1. Identify the menu bar at the top of your screen, providing access to a range of functionalities.
  2. Click on the tab for the workflow you'd like to focus on to reveal the tools available to you.


Navigating image slices:

  1. Scroll through image stacks using the mouse scroll wheel or the slider on the right side of the viewport.
  2. Click on any image to update the crosshairs in all three planes to that exact location.
  3. To zoom in, navigate to the View menu and select the Zoom tool. Then, drag a rectangle around the area you'd like to zoom in on. To reset the zoom level, click the Fit to screen tool in the View menu and select your plane. Shortcut: hold Ctrl + right-click while moving the mouse for interactive zooming.
  4. To pan or translate windows, select the Pan tool in the View menu. Then, hold the left mouse button and drag your cursor around. Shortcut: push down the scroll wheel and drag your mouse.
  5. Hover your cursor over any viewport and hit the spacebar to bring that plane to full screen. Press the spacebar again to return to the original multi-view layout.
