Materialise

Materialise is a dynamic international high-tech company, founded in 1990 and headquartered in Belgium, with over 2.300 employees worldwide. Materialise’s mission is to innovate for a better and healthier world through its software and hardware infrastructure and in-depth knowledge of additive manufacturing (also known as 3D Printing). Our customers are in diverse industries, such as automotive, aerospace, medical, research and academia.

As a growing company, Materialise is always looking for enthusiastic professionals who want to work in an environment full of revolutionary technology and surrounded by people passionate about their work.

The Position (1)

Optimization of mechanical methods for Titanium alloys produced via Selective Laser Melting

Description:

Both in R&D as in routine quality control, mechanical testing is an essential tool for material characterization. At Materialise, mechanical testing (static and dynamic) are used in development and improvement projects for the selective laser melted (SLM) titanium implants. Optimization the mechanical test methods will assist in achieving the highest quality and highest efficiency for these critical tests.

The aim of this internship is to improve the current test method protocols, by characterizing the sensitivity and repeatability of different methods and investigating the effect of testing speed on critical properties. The intern will combine review of existing industry standards and investigation of non-standardized test methods. At the end of the internship, the intern will present the data and next actions to the several Materialise teams such as Process R&D, Process engineering and Quality.

The intern will work in the Process R&D team in the Materialise Medical unit where the intern will learn more about the basics of additive manufacturing for medical applications.

Period: July – September 2022

The Position (2)

Optimization of optical microscopy methods for Titanium alloys produced via Selective Laser Melting

Description:

Both in R&D as in routine quality control, optical microscopy is an essential tool for material characterization. At Materialise, optical microscopy is a critical test used in development and improvement projects for the selective laser melted (SLM) titanium implants. Optimization of sample preparation and microscopic test methods will assist in achieving the highest quality and highest efficiency for these critical tests.

The aim of this internship is to improve the current process of optical microscopy, starting from fast and reliable sample preparation up to optimization of software algorithms to decrease the analysis time for different sample types. Next to optimization of existing methods the intern will be requested to provide a working prototype to quickly compare 2D CAD file (input) to 2D microscopic images (output).

The intern will work in the Process R&D team in the Materialise Medical unit where the intern will learn more about the basics of additive manufacturing for medical applications.

Period: July – September 2022

The Position (3)

Technical and economical evaluation of additive manufacturing for novel medical implants

Description:

As a pioneer in 3D printing, Materialise is constantly evaluating where additive manufacturing can make a difference in the production medical devices. Next to technical evaluation of additive manufactured structures, there is a need to evaluate whether the final products are economically viable.

The aim of this internship is to evaluate the technical and business potential of two new implants types. The technical evaluation will consist out of geometrical and mechanical evaluation of representative test samples. The economical evaluation will consist out of cost calculations for the full process which will be compared to the cost of standard manufacturing methods.

The intern will work in the Medical Process R&D team but will communicate to different stakeholders going from product developers to process engineers. As such the intern will be exposed to a great environment to learn more about the role of additive manufacturing in the medical device industry.

Period: July – September 2022
