We have an interesting internship for 2 - 3 months in our medical department.

Starting date between September and November 2018.

Topic: Biomechanical characterization of aortic aneurysmatic tissue through inverse finite element analysis

An aneurysm is a serious and common disease which consists of a localized dilatation of the aorta. The primary treatment available is a highly-invasive elective surgery. The current criteria for surgery are based on size and perform poorly.  Wall stress estimation through biomechanical simulations represents a promising tool to provide a more individual risk assessment and have the potentiality to reduce not only mortality but also unnecessary surgeries.

Mechanical properties are crucial for the accuracy of these finite element simulations. We developed in-house a method to estimate aortic material properties in-vivo. Further development and/or validation of the method is however necessary.

The internship will involve:

  • Estimation of mechanical properties of the aneurysm based on non-invasive measurements (based on python) and on FE simulations (Abaqus)
  • Validation/optimization of the current estimation algorithm (Monte Carlo simulation)
  • Processing of clinical images to obtain patient-specific geometries apt for FE simulations.


  • Coding experience (preferably python)
  • Experience with FE simulations for medical applications

Starting date: between September and November

Duration: flexible, around 2-3 months
