SOFCOT, or the Congress of the French Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, is the biggest congress of its kind for the French-speaking world. Annually held in Paris, the trade show is the place to be for orthopaedic surgeons, giving them an opportunity to get up to date with the latest techniques, publications and technology.
There was a notable emphasis on technology at SOFCOT 2016. Orthopaedics is a field of medicine which stands to gain a lot from technology, and this edition brought that home even more clearly. There were three separate symposia, which covered the results of reversed prostheses in recent fractures of the upper end of the humerus; the post-traumatic osteoarthritis; and fractures of the lower limbs in teenagers. There were also nine round tables about various specific topics, from hybrid surgery rooms to how the local medical community handled the Paris Attacks in November last year.
We were happy to see many of our customers present at the company, and attended a very interesting presentation given by SOFCOT’s hip and knee subgroup, SFHG, which featured our hip implants. The Materialise aMace system has been part of a number of technological innovations in orthopaedic implants, and allows the surgeon to perform more effective surgeries on patients with a severe acetabular defect by using a custom 3D-printed titanium joint replacement. Given the growing demand for digital templating with a link to PACS throughout France, we were also pleased to discuss digital pre-operative planning with surgeons from a variety of specialisms.
We managed to learn about the latest innovations in Orthopaedics, heard some fascinating speakers and participated in highly useful workshops, making this year’s visit a success! Until next year, SOFCOT!
