The precise 3D approach enabled by SimPlant^® OMS in diagnosis and planning represents a revolutionary shift in orthognathic surgery. We finally are able to take 3D cephalometric measurements and perform 3D set-up and VTO, with to-the-millimeter accuracy, avoiding errors inherent to the classical 2D ceph analysis and VTO. With this new tool, a no-return path is initiated in which the only two variables will be the patient and the surgeon's skills.

SimPlant^® OMS is currently the “gold standard” in advanced pre-prosthetic and orthognatic surgery planning. Neither a graft, an osteotomy nor the movement of an osteotomy fragment is ever done in the two dimensions of an OPG or a teleradiography and not even in the two dimensions of a dental, axial or coronal TC. SimPlant^® OMS has a unique 3D position which is based on case-by-case anatomical peculiarities and on the type of treatment planned. Perfect understanding of these 3D spatial relationships of the grafts, the osteotomies and/or the bone movements has been made possible thanks to the development of SimPlant^® OMS. These days we can simulate the surgery preoperatively and we can verify how what we had only seen on the computer is really carried out in the operating theatre. For me, SimPlant^® OMS is an essential planning tool, as well as an irreplaceable means of communicating with the patient and the rest of the team.

I was concerned for years about the accuracy of the classic protocols for planning in orthognatic surgery. With SimPlant^® OMS, the whole diagnosis and planning process is done in a full digital fashion. No more facial arches, articulators and plaster casts. We can move the maxilla forward, up or down, correct canting and occlusal plane at the same time and check the result immediately, even with a fotorealistic soft tissue prediction. A dream come true!
