Magics RapidFit proves a big help in part assembly at DaimlerChrysler

DaimlerChrysler AG's model manufacturing EP/QFM department mainly uses Magics RapidFit for first visual control of prototypes, for pre-production quality checks and as an aid in part assembly. The following is a case study of their use of Magics RapidFit to facilitate part assembly for a rear axle carrier.

One of the first steps in the production process was constructing a prototype from PA material. Since this was a large part, it was cut into various pieces that were built individually on a selective laser sintering machine.

The model manufacturing team then used Magics RapidFit to design fixtures that would ensure accurate assembly of the parts. These fixtures were made using stereolithography technology. Securing the fixtures on the reference plates didn't take much time since Magics RapidFit software automatically labelled the fixtures with their position on the reference plate and the name of the part. Special screws and quarter-turn fasteners made connecting the fixtures to the reference plate quick and easy. Thanks to its very simple assembly method, the RapidFit system was ready for use in a few minutes.

The system was then used to assemble the prototype and for a first visual and quality check.
