Successful jaw implant surgery

Successful jaw implant surgery through advanced virtual planning

A man who suffered from an infection of his conventional jaw implant is smiling again. He received a new, custom-fit implant that could be designed by using Mimics and 3-matic software. This case clearly illustrates that using rapid manufacturing technology enables faster, more accurate, better planned implant surgeries than is possible with conventional techniques.

3-matic Assists in True Rapid Design and Manufacturing of a Custom Skull Implant

3-matic Assists in True Rapid Design and Manufacturing of a Custom Skull Implant

3-matic was used to design a custom skull implant to perfectly match the patient's cranial defect. The case describes the different steps taken by implant engineers M. Beerens and P. Laeven (IDEE) to reach the final design. The implant is fabricated by Arcam using EBM technology. Using 3-matic for the design of this skull implant, has decreased the design time by 68%. The option of designing a custom implant makes performing an operation easier on the surgeon and can result in a 50% reduction of the time needed in the operating theatre.

Westland Helicopters is flying high thanks to 3-matic-Remesh technology

Westland Helicopters is flying high thanks to 3-matic-Remesh technology

Following a successful benchmark case study, Westland Helicopters Limited (WHL) has decided to use 3-matic software for generating surface meshes for their CFD1 projects. WHL wished to expand the range aerodynamic data available for this helicopter beyond that accessible from wind tunnel testing. This required the generation of a new CFD model of the helicopter. During the project, Westland’s Fluid Dynamics and Environmental team faced several challenges, which they discovered could be tackled easily using 3-matic.

3-matic allows for fast, easy digital design of a prosthesis for cranioplasty

3-matic allows for fast, easy digital design of a prosthesis for cranioplasty

When a cranial plate needs to be constructed, the objective is always to recreate the skull’s geometry. Since the cranial plate needs to fit perfectly on the patient’s skull you need to incorporate scanned anatomical data into the design. This is usually a rather complex and time-consuming task. 3-matic however can work directly on the data generated by the image processing software, which results in considerable time-savings. In addition, the software provides the necessary tools for easily designing even the most complex prostheses, like those for defect crossing the skull’s midline.

Cornell University swaps horses

Imagine the ability to prepare scanned human or animal geometry for CFD analysis in a few days. Cornell University,Ithaca, NY, discovered that, using Materialise’ Remesh technology, they can reduce file preparation time from several weeks to a day or two! The days of moving and reshaping triangle after triangle manually in pre-processing software are gone forever. Remesh technology enables the user to generate a surface mesh quickly. The resulting mesh is directly transformable in a volume mesh for CFD.

No slow-paced turtles for Hester Studios

No slow-paced turtles for Hester Studios

Previously, the animation and toy industry was often restrained in its tool design because of their complicated, freeform designs. Now, 3-Matic software has proven its value for these industries by enabling you to design the most complex tools easily. Hester Studios have saved a lot of time in their Turtle Girl project by using 3-Matic for the tool design. After having the figurine scanned, they could immediately move on to the tool design by eliminating time-consuming reverse engineering steps.

Effortless design of a custom preformed titanium membrane

Effortless design of a custom preformed titanium membrane

In case of bone tumors the treatment aims at an ideal reconstruction of the weight-bearing bones after tumor resection, which translates as biological affinity, resistance to infection and sufficient biomechanical strength and durability. During surgery, the tumor is excised, while an implant is placed to guarantee the strength of the bone. Such implants can be produced through hydro-forming where a titanium membrane is pressed on a kind of mold. 3-Matic software provides the necessary tools for pre-operative planning and the design of the stereolithography master model for casting. Using a digital route - 3-Matic - ensures accuracy and results in serious time gains.

Hipped on 3-matic: Designing a custom three-flange cup prosthesis in about an hour!

Hipped on 3-matic

3-matic’s advanced tools allow you to create custom designs for a “three-flange” prosthesis quickly and easily, because you can combine scanned data (the patient’s hip) directly with CAD data (the socket of the prosthesis). You’ll save a huge amount of time because you eliminate the first step of complex reverse engineering of the scanned data to a CAD format. In addition, the software offers several advanced operations that make it easy to further alter the design, ensuring a perfect fit.
