Materialise - Official partner of Citroën
The “Hypnos” concept car is currently tipped to be the leading concept of the show. It is a fluid mix between an SUV and a Coupé Sports car combined with the internal space of a Monospace model. The car belongs to the cross-over CUV vehicle segment like the previously released and impressive BMW X6, for instance.
Materialise has never been more involved in the realization of a functional 1-off car as in this Hypnos project. Materialise built almost the whole interior by utilising additive layer manufacturing technologies. This was only possible with the patented Materialise Mammoth machines, an in-house developed stereolithography technology that can build parts with dimensions of 2100mm x 700mm x 800mm in a single piece. This is truly unique in the industry!
The car itself is fully-functional; meaning that the seats, commands, armrests, doors, engine, wheels, gearshift etc. are real components that are made to drive the car in real conditions at about 100km/h. This is made possible by fully exploiting additive layer manufacturing techniques to produce freeform production-grade components. Throughout this project Materialise had to ensure that maximum aesthetic impact was made while maintaining their functionality. The project required a combination of all the technical solutions that Materialise offer in order to provide a high level of added value. These services include a mix of design, R&D, engineering, CAD possibilities, material selection and technical solutions.
