The orthopedics team of the HELIOS Clinic in Hildesheim, Germany, helped improve a patient’s mobility by helping her move freely again, without pain, and by making it possible for her to play with her child. The team, led by Prof. Dr. Burkhard Wippermann, used a 3D-printed patient-specific aMace hip implant made by Materialise.

Getting Fractured NOF Procedures Right First Time with Digital Templating

There are around 70,000 fractured neck of femur (#NOF or broken hip) cases admitted to hospital annually in the UK, about 1.6 million worldwide. It is a serious and potentially life threatening injury in older people and an increasing financial burden on the Health Service. Subcapital fracture is a common type (where the fracture line extends through the junction of the head and neck of femur) and is generally treated with hemiarthroplasty. Getting the surgery right first time is a critical part of the solution, as treating a subcapital neck of femur fracture well can significantly reduce mortality and morbidity as well as reduce associated costs for the hospital.

A very present topic in Medical 3D Printing is the regulation and cost of 3D Printing and its use in hospitals. At the Materialise World Summit in April, we had the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion with main subject: "3D Printing in Hospitals: Where Are We Heading?" The topics discussed were 3D printing costs, quality and regulation, and the need for clinical proof of the benefits of 3D Printing. Innovative aMace Technology for Complex Pelvic Tumor Resection and Reconstruction

New, 3D-printed hip implants have made five bone cancer patients, two clinical teams and Materialise, very happy. Together with the orthopaedic departments of the University Children’s Hospital Basel (UKBB), Switzerland and the Righospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark, Materialise participated in a study to reconstruct periacetabular defects caused by tumors. Dr. Krieg and his colleagues shared their findings in the medical magazine, Leading Opinions.

A Study of Sizing Accuracy for Digitally Templating the Exeter Hip

The following is a retrospective study of 39 consecutive Primary Exeter total hip replacements (THR) carried out by Dr Grant Shaw, orthopaedic surgeon in Portsmouth, UK. The THR procedures were performed by Dr Shaw at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, between August 2016 and May 2017. Of the 39 procedures, 35 were elective hip arthroplasties and 4 were acute total hip replacements undertaken for neck of femur (NOF) fractures. All patients had standard AP Pelvis for Hip x-rays taken with a disc scaling marker placed in the hip plane.
