Into a higher gear with Materialise scan-to-FEA technology

Scan-to-FEA shortcut for Hansen Transmissions Ltd – Scanning a component when no data is available and preparing it to yield accurate FEA results, was previously considered impractical by Hansen Transmissions Ltd. However along came Materialise, who scanned the component and used 3-matic to quickly repair the scan data, easily combine it with CAD data forming a single project and optimize the mesh in a matter of hours.

Cornell University swaps horses

Imagine the ability to prepare scanned human or animal geometry for CFD analysis in a few days. Cornell University,Ithaca, NY, discovered that, using Materialise’ Remesh technology, they can reduce file preparation time from several weeks to a day or two! The days of moving and reshaping triangle after triangle manually in pre-processing software are gone forever. Remesh technology enables the user to generate a surface mesh quickly. The resulting mesh is directly transformable in a volume mesh for CFD.

CFD simulation of water flow through sandstone using micro-CT

CFD simulation of water flow through sandstone using micro-CT

For years, researchers around the globe have had a hard time examining very small-scale objects--say, micrometer level. Such research requires the use of very accurate tools: micro-CT scanners that can retrieve structural information down to micrometer level and state-of-the-art software that has the ability to process and analyze small scale images without any compromise. In the following case study researchers were looking for a way to understand water flow through Belgian sandstone. The insights they obtained will be used to study the extraction of fossil fuels from porous rock formations. Thanks to the joint expertise of inCT, Materialise and TotalSim, this analysis was completed effortlessly.
